Archaeological Museum

Located in the central square of the vivacious city of Ioannina, the main site of an important university, the Museum displays collections originating from the entire Epirus Region from the paleolithic era to the medieval era. Among the most significant archeological finds in the Sanctuary of Dodona is the revival of one of the major cult centers in Ancient Greece, located south of the modern center and in Nicopolis. This city was founded by Augusto after his victory at Azio over Marc Anthony and Cleopatra. It is the main site of the solemn Azian celebrations, performed every four years on the anniversary of the battle. The museum is a candidate for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2012.
